CPED Bilingual Authorization of Fieldwork Support

BILINGUAL AUTHORIZATION OF FIELDWORK SUPPORT

Dear Administrator,

Your teacher is applying to the Online In-Service Bilingual Authorization Program at Santa Clara University. Since this is an in-service program, applicants must have access to a classroom setting for their fieldwork, which is why verification of employment is required. While fieldwork will take place during school hours, coursework will be conducted online in the evenings.

Program Overview

The program consists of four online courses that are completed:

  • Summer Cohort: June – December

  • Fall Cohort: September – June

Employment Requirement

Continuous employment with the school for the duration of the SCU Bilingual Authorization Program is a condition of participation. If admitted, the school's HR office will be required to provide formal verification of employment.

Fieldwork & Video Recording Requirements

As part of their fieldwork, your teacher must complete 10 hours (600 minutes) of instructional activities in Spanish. These 10 hours include:

  • 4 hours of recorded video lessons (required to be submitted and archived)

  • 6 hours of additional fieldwork assignments (no video recording required)

Each recorded lesson may range from 20 to 60 minutes in length, but the total 4 hours of video lessons must be completed and submitted. The purpose of these recordings is to provide instructional feedback to your teacher. Only SCU faculty and approved graduate assistants will review the videos, with a focus on the teacher’s performance—not the students. To protect student privacy, any students appearing in the recordings will not be identified by name. Additionally, your teacher may collect parental consent forms before any recording takes place according to your school requirements.

Your teacher has three options for recording their Spanish-language lessons (students do not need to be Spanish speakers):

  1. Record lessons with students from their own classroom during regular class time.

  2. Record lessons with their own students during prep periods or before/after school.

  3. Record lessons with students from another classroom at your school (students not on their roster), either during school hours or before/after school.

For CTC audit purposes, SCU is required to archive the 4 hours of recorded video lessons from the final course in the program. The additional 6 hours of fieldwork will not require video recordings but will be documented through other coursework assignments.

Research Participation (Optional)

As a graduate student, your teacher may be invited to participate in research projects at Santa Clara University. If they choose to share their fieldwork videos for research purposes, a separate consent process will be required, following the research project’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol.
